Bill Title: Amends the School Code. Requires the State Board of Education to develop and implement a School Share Table Program, including guidelines for the use of share tables in schools for kindergarten through grade 12; defines "share tables". Provides that the Program shall be implemented as a part of any school-based child nutrition program administered by the State Board. Requires the guidelines for the use of share tables to be made available on the website of the State Board on or before January 1, 2024. Requires the use of share tables to comply with any applicable local and State health and food safety requirements. Provides for the adoption of rules. Effective immediately.

1 AN ACT concerning education.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
52-3.196 as follows:
6 (105 ILCS 5/2-3.196 new)
7 Sec. 2-3.196. School Share Table Program.
8 (a) For the purposes of this Section, "share tables" means
9tables or stations to which students may return whole food or
10beverage items that they choose not to consume, allowing those
11food and beverage items to then be made available for students
12who may want additional servings or otherwise donated to local
13food donation centers.
14 (b) The State Board of Education shall develop and
15implement a School Share Table Program, including guidelines
16for the use of share tables in schools for kindergarten
17through grade 12. The Program shall be implemented as a part of
18any school-based child nutrition program administered by the
19State Board.
20 (c) The guidelines for the use of share tables established
21under this Section shall be made available on the website of
22the State Board on or before January 1, 2024.
23 (d) The use of share tables as provided under this Section

3 (e) The State Board may adopt any rules necessary for the
4implementation and administration of the program developed
5under this Section.
6 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
7becoming law.
