HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to honor our friend and colleague,
4Illinois State Representative Mike Boland, for his service to
5the people of the State of Illinois; and
6 WHEREAS, Throughout his 30 years as a social studies
7teacher, Representative Boland taught thousands of students
8about self-government and the importance of active
9citizenship; and
10 WHEREAS, During his 16 years in the House, Representative
11Boland has been doing what he used to teach about, proposing
12and voting on bills to make public policy; his priorities have
13been bills to protect the environment, to reform the election
14process, to extend health care, and to assist veterans; and
15 WHEREAS, Representative Boland worked on behalf of
16environmental and energy-saving legislation throughout his 16
17years by sponsoring bills to require all new vehicles purchased
18by the State to be hybrids, bio-diesel, or flex-fuel; to
19require State facilities to gradually change inefficient light
20bulbs to Energy Star and LED lighting; and the Green Buildings
21Act; and

1 WHEREAS, In 1998, Rep. Boland and then State Senator Barack
2Obama sponsored the Bernadin Amendment to provide universal
3health care in Illinois, which did not pass at the time; the
4goal of the Bernadin Amendment is closer to attainment due to
5passage of President Obama's health care act; and
6 WHEREAS, As former Chairman of the Elections and Campaign
7Reform Committee, Representative Boland passed reform
8legislation guaranteeing a paper trail in electronic voting to
9make votes more secure, and he passed legislation consolidating
10most of the local elections to save money for property tax
11payers in each election cycle; and
12 WHEREAS, As Chairman of the Higher Education Committee,
13Representative Boland has been instrumental in the
14construction of a Western Illinois campus in the Quad City
15area, the largest metropolitan area in the country without a
16four-year public university; and
17 WHEREAS, In his 16 years Representative Boland has earned
1835 awards from a wide variety of groups including those
19representing farmers, educators, firefighters, mental health
20advocates, and veterans; and
21 WHEREAS, Representative Boland has served as a model of
22hard work, integrity, and dedication for his constituency and

1the people of Illinois; therefore, be it
2 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
4honor our friend and colleague, Illinois State Representative
5Mike Boland, for his service and wish him great success and
6happiness in the future; and be it further
7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to Representative Mike Boland as a symbol of our
9esteem and respect.
