2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives
are pleased to honor our friend and colleague, | ||||||
4 | Illinois State Representative
Mike Boland, for his service to | ||||||
5 | the people of the State of Illinois; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Throughout his 30 years as a social studies | ||||||
7 | teacher,
Representative Boland taught thousands of students | ||||||
8 | about self-government
and the importance of active | ||||||
9 | citizenship; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, During his 16 years in the House, Representative
| ||||||
11 | Boland has been doing what he used to teach about, proposing | ||||||
12 | and voting
on bills to make public policy; his priorities have | ||||||
13 | been bills to protect
the environment, to reform the election | ||||||
14 | process, to extend health care, and to
assist veterans;
and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Representative Boland worked on behalf of
| ||||||
16 | environmental and energy-saving legislation throughout his 16 | ||||||
17 | years by
sponsoring bills to require all new vehicles purchased | ||||||
18 | by the State to be
hybrids, bio-diesel, or flex-fuel; to | ||||||
19 | require State facilities to gradually
change inefficient light | ||||||
20 | bulbs to Energy Star and LED lighting; and the
Green Buildings | ||||||
21 | Act; and

1 | WHEREAS, In 1998, Rep. Boland and then State Senator Barack
| ||||||
2 | Obama sponsored the Bernadin Amendment to provide universal | ||||||
3 | health care
in Illinois, which did not pass at the time; the | ||||||
4 | goal of the Bernadin Amendment is closer to
attainment due to | ||||||
5 | passage of President Obama's health care act; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, As former Chairman of the Elections and
Campaign | ||||||
7 | Reform Committee, Representative Boland passed reform
| ||||||
8 | legislation guaranteeing a paper trail in electronic voting to | ||||||
9 | make votes
more secure, and he passed legislation consolidating | ||||||
10 | most of the local
elections to save money for property tax | ||||||
11 | payers in each election cycle; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, As Chairman of the Higher Education Committee,
| ||||||
13 | Representative Boland has been instrumental in the | ||||||
14 | construction of a
Western Illinois campus in the Quad City | ||||||
15 | area, the largest
metropolitan area in the country without a | ||||||
16 | four-year public university; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, In his 16 years Representative Boland has earned | ||||||
18 | 35 awards
from a wide variety of groups including those | ||||||
19 | representing farmers,
educators, firefighters, mental health | ||||||
20 | advocates, and veterans; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Representative Boland has served as a model of
| ||||||
22 | hard work, integrity, and dedication for his constituency and |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | the people of
Illinois; therefore, be it
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
3 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
4 | honor our friend and colleague, Illinois State Representative | ||||||
5 | Mike
Boland, for his service and wish him great success and | ||||||
6 | happiness in the
future; and be it further

7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||

Representative Mike Boland as a symbol of our | ||||||
