2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Platon | ||||||
4 | Constantine Deliyannis of Deerfield; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was a brilliant mathematics | ||||||
6 | scholar, whose contributions to academia were exceeded only by | ||||||
7 | his love and devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren; | ||||||
8 | and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was born on August 21, 1931, in | ||||||
10 | Athens, Greece; his parents were Constantine and Synodia | ||||||
11 | (Korbeti) Deliyannis; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis received a degree in electrical | ||||||
13 | and mechanical engineering from the prestigious National | ||||||
14 | Metsovion Polytechnic University in Athens in 1954; soon after, | ||||||
15 | he began his graduate studies in the United States at the | ||||||
16 | University of Chicago; and

17 | WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis' studies were interrupted when | ||||||
18 | he was required to return to Greece to serve over 2 years as a | ||||||
19 | naval officer in the Greek Royal Navy; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Following his military service in Greece, Platon |

1 | Deliyannis resumed his studies at the University of Chicago and | ||||||
2 | received a Doctorate of Mathematics from the institution in | ||||||
3 | 1963; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, From 1966 to 1969, Platon Deliyannis and his | ||||||
5 | family moved back to Athens, Greece, where he served as the | ||||||
6 | Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Physics of the | ||||||
7 | Nuclear Research Centre Demokritos to consider the peaceful | ||||||
8 | uses of nuclear energy; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In 1969, Platon Deliyannis and his family moved | ||||||
10 | back to the United States, settling in Deerfield, where he | ||||||
11 | served as a Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology | ||||||
12 | for 32 years and as Professor Emeritus for the following 9 | ||||||
13 | years; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, During his career, Platon Deliyannis was a widely | ||||||
15 | respected scholar in the international mathematics community, | ||||||
16 | especially for his research in measure theory and functional | ||||||
17 | analysis, and was particularly noted for his pioneering | ||||||
18 | research in quantum logics and the mathematical foundations of | ||||||
19 | quantum theory; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Aside from his academic scholarship, Platon | ||||||
21 | Deliyannis was a faculty member that was respected and liked by | ||||||
22 | his peers and his students; and

1 | WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was active in the Greek Orthodox | ||||||
2 | Church; he was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Greek | ||||||
3 | Orthodox Church for 29 years and the Ascension of Our Lord | ||||||
4 | Greek Orthodox Church for the last 10 years; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was a cultured and enlightened | ||||||
6 | man who was a passionate fan of classical music; he played the | ||||||
7 | piano and classical guitar and regularly attended the symphony | ||||||
8 | and opera; he was an avid reader; he enjoyed cooking and | ||||||
9 | entertaining with friends; he travelled to virtually every | ||||||
10 | country in Europe, as well as China, Canada, and 39 U.S. | ||||||
11 | states; he also enjoyed woodworking and building bookcases and | ||||||
12 | other furniture; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was a kind and gentle man of the | ||||||
14 | highest integrity, who had a robust sense of humor, a loving | ||||||
15 | demeanor, and a genuine zest for life; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis placed above all else his | ||||||
17 | devotion to his beloved family, including his wife Virginia | ||||||
18 | (Revidi) Deliyannis, their children, Constantine Deliyannis | ||||||
19 | and Anny (Deliyannis) Gary, and their grandchildren, Alex, | ||||||
20 | Harry, Simon, and Zoe, all of whom survive him and who loved | ||||||
21 | him dearly; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
2 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
3 | mourn the passing of Platon Constantine Deliyannis; and be it | ||||||
4 | further
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Platon Deliyannis as an expression | ||||||
7 | of our sympathy.
