2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate H. Dennis Smith on | ||||||
4 | the occasion of being nominated for the WSPN Non-Profit | ||||||
5 | Executive of the Year award by the Northern Illinois Food Bank; | ||||||
6 | and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The West Suburban Philanthropic Network (WSPN) is | ||||||
8 | a 21-year-old organization dedicated to supporting development | ||||||
9 | professionals and advancing philanthropy in the western | ||||||
10 | suburbs of Chicago; the Non-Profit Executive of the Year award | ||||||
11 | is given by WSPN to a senior-level not-for-profit executive who | ||||||
12 | has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing the | ||||||
13 | mission and services of his or her organization for the benefit | ||||||
14 | of residents in the western suburbs; and

15 | WHEREAS, H. Dennis Smith attended the University of South | ||||||
16 | Carolina, where he majored in journalism; he then switched to | ||||||
17 | the Charles Morris Price School of Advertising in Philadelphia, | ||||||
18 | Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1964; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, H. Dennis Smith joined the Northern Illinois Food | ||||||
20 | Bank in August of 1998, following his retirement as Director of | ||||||
21 | Corporate Communications for Van den Bergh/Lipton Foods; and

1 | WHEREAS, During his tenure with the Northern Illinois Food | ||||||
2 | Bank, H. Dennis Smith has guided the organization to new | ||||||
3 | heights of success through his incredible vision, hard work, | ||||||
4 | and discipline; the food bank has increased the amount of food | ||||||
5 | it distributes from 7 million to 29 million pounds in 2009; the | ||||||
6 | food bank has also increased its partner agencies from 210 to | ||||||
7 | 547 and expanded its revenue from $1 million to $6 million; in | ||||||
8 | addition, NIFB now operates 2 branch locations in Park City and | ||||||
9 | Rockford and has strong ties to numerous county government | ||||||
10 | officials and community organizations throughout DuPage | ||||||
11 | County; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Under H. Dennis Smith's guidance, the Northern | ||||||
13 | Illinois Food Bank has received a Charity Navigator 4-Star | ||||||
14 | Rating for 6 consecutive years and has been the recipient of | ||||||
15 | numerous awards, including the Innovative Advocacy Program of | ||||||
16 | the Year award, the Food Sourcing Program of the Year award, | ||||||
17 | and Group Volunteer of the Year award, and the Congressional | ||||||
18 | Hunger Award; and

19 | WHEREAS, H. Dennis Smith is the past president of the | ||||||
20 | Illinois Food Bank Association; he is the chair of Feeding | ||||||
21 | America's National Hunger Action Committee; he is also a member | ||||||
22 | of the Illinois Commission on Poverty; and
| ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, H. Dennis Smith and his loving wife, Joy, live in |

1 | Geneva; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, H. Dennis Smith serves as a model of hard work, | ||||||
3 | integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of | ||||||
4 | Illinois; therefore, be it

5 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
6 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
7 | congratulate H. Dennis Smith on the occasion of his nomination | ||||||
8 | for the WSPN Non-Profit Executive of the Year award and wish | ||||||
9 | him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it | ||||||
10 | further
