HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate John "Sam" Vancil
4on his retirement from the DuQuoin Community Unit School
5District #300 Board of Education; and
6 WHEREAS, Sam Vancil is the longest, continuous School Board
7member in the State of Illinois, and served the DuQuoin
8community for 58 years; he organized the Sunfield Grade School
9District Board in 1958, which consolidated into the Duquoin
10District #300 School Board in 1968; he served in many
11positions, including President, Vice President, and Secretary;
12he retired on June 1, 2017; and
13 WHEREAS, Sam Vancil was born on a homestead in Sunfield to
14Miles and Annabelle Vancil on June 21, 1931; one of three boys,
15he attended Sunfield Grade School and graduated from DuQuoin
16High School; he served as a radar technician in the United
17States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Texas
18and Washington; and
19 WHEREAS, Sam Vancil married Dorothy Elaine Timpner on
20August 9, 1952, and they recently celebrated their 65th wedding
21anniversary; they have five children, Deborah, David, Dennis,
22Darryl, and Denise, nine grandchildren, and 16

1great-grandchildren; and
2 WHEREAS, After his military service, Sam Vancil took over a
3farming operation from his uncles; he worked as a shovel
4operator at Burning Star #2 for 37 years; he then accepted a
5position with the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals,
6where he served as Assistant Director until his retirement 12
7years later; and
8 WHEREAS, Sam Vancil played an instrumental role in the
9construction of the District's new K-8 School complex in 1999
10and the new DuQuoin High School, which was completed in 2012;
11and
12 WHEREAS, Sam Vancil is an active member of the Sunfield
13United Methodist Church, where he is a member of the choir, a
14Chairperson on the Church Council, and a Sunday School teacher;
15he helped complete the capital project, which raised money to
16build a new church, fellowship hall, and parsonage; therefore,
17be it
18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
20congratulate John "Sam" Vancil on his retirement from the
21DuQuoin Community Unit School District #300 Board of Education
22and we recognize his strong commitment to the Sunfield and

1DuQuoin communities, his decades of hard work, and his
2dedication to the to the future generations of Illinois; and be
3it further
4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
