HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is
3designated as the calendar week commencing the last Sunday in
4February; and
5 WHEREAS, Thirty million Americans will struggle with an
6eating disorder at some point in their lives; and
7 WHEREAS, Eating disorders affect people of all ages, races,
8sizes, sexual orientations, ethnicities, and socioeconomic
9statuses; and
10 WHEREAS, Eating disorders, including the specific
11disorders of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating
12disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, and other
13specified feeding or eating disorders, are complex,
14biologically-based illnesses; and
15 WHEREAS, Persons with eating disorders have amongst the
16highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses; and
17 WHEREAS, Eating disorders have a high prevalence amongst
18active military servicemembers and veterans; and
19 WHEREAS, Health professionals receive limited or no formal

1training about eating disorders or the identification and
2treatment of such orders; and
3 WHEREAS, Eating disorders can be successfully treated with
4interventions at the appropriate durations and levels of care,
5yet only one third of persons with eating disorders receive any
6medical, psychiatric, or therapeutic care; and
7 WHEREAS, Best practice treatment of eating disorders
8includes patients, their families, and a comprehensive team of
9professionals, such as social workers, mental health
10counselors, primary care practitioners, psychiatrists,
11psychologists, dietitians, art therapists, and other specialty
12providers; and
13 WHEREAS, To inform evidence-based treatments, promote
14prevention efforts, facilitate early identification, and
15provide insight on illness causation and the damaging effects
16of eating disorders upon minds and bodies, more research is
17needed; and
18 WHEREAS, Every 62 minutes, someone dies as a result of an
19eating disorder; therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1recognize the week of February 26 through March 4, 2018 as
2National Eating Disorders Awareness Week; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That we support the goals and ideals of a
4national week to raise public awareness and understanding of
5eating disorders; we recognize the rate at which individuals in
6the United States are affected by eating disorders and the
7inadequate rate at which such individuals week treatment; we
8acknowledge that eating disorders can be successfully treated
9with appropriate levels of care and that individuals with
10eating disorders can and do recover; and be it further
11 RESOLVED, That we encourage the Federal Government, State
12and local governments, and citizens of the United States to
13support National Eating Disorders Awareness Week through
14appropriate programs and activities and to promote public
15awareness of eating disorders.
