1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Native plants, unlike non-native species, are
3 | vitally important to Illinois
because they are adapted to the
4 | conditions of the local environment and are the
foundation of | ||||||
5 | the region's biodiversity; plant species native to woodlands,
6 | prairies, and
wetlands serve as a critical resource for birds,
7 | as they provide essential food and
shelter and help mitigate
8 | the challenging effects of the changing climate; many species
| ||||||
9 | of insects have co-evolved with native plants over time and are
10 | essential food sources
for birds; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Each community in Illinois can provide healthy
12 | spaces for birds by
expanding or maintaining native plant
13 | habitats; such spaces will also benefit the citizens
of | ||||||
14 | Illinois; by simply choosing native plants for a personal
15 | garden, yard, or public space,
the use of fertilizer and
16 | pesticides can be minimized, significant amounts of water can
| ||||||
17 | be conserved, and energy demands can be reduced, thus creating
18 | heathy
communities and saving costs for households, towns, and
19 | cities; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Native plants play a critical role in supporting
21 | birds and the environment; therefore, be it
| ||||||
22 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
2 | we declare April 20-24, 2020 as Native Plant Week; and be it
3 | further
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 | presented to the Lake County
Audubon Society.
