HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Robert
"Bob" W. Pierson of Orland Park, who passed away on June 6,
2017; and
WHEREAS, Robert Pierson was born in 1941; and
WHEREAS, Robert Pierson retired at the end of 2015 after 10
years as chairman of the International Executive Council for
the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); he
was a member of Chicago Local 9 for 50 years and served as the
its business manager for nearly 20 years; and
WHEREAS, Robert Pierson was initiated into Local 9 in 1966
after brief stints with the Teamsters and Carpenters unions; he
found his home with the IBEW, working as an outside
construction lineman with Hecker Electric out of Chicago;
during that time, he was part of the original build of the Red
Line, the busiest line of Chicago's "L"; and
WHEREAS, Robert Pierson was hired onto staff at Local 9 in
1980 as a business representative; a year later, he became
assistant business manager and held that job for 16 years;
among his accomplishments was the organization of 1,100

Chicago-area cable television workers into Local 9; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, Robert Pierson was elected business
manager and he earned a reputation as one of Chicago's most
influential labor leaders; and
WHEREAS, Robert Pierson was also an executive board member
of the Chicago Federation of Labor; and
WHEREAS, Robert Pierson was regarded as a no-nonsense
negotiator on behalf of hundreds of City of Chicago employees,
including electrical workers in the city's transit, park and
water reclamation departments, contractors, and line clearance
tree trimmers; and
WHEREAS, Robert Pierson was the beloved husband of Shirley
(Pecho); the loving father of Wendy, Gary (Michele), Chad
(Kimberly), and Todd (Lisa) Pierson; the devoted grandfather of
Kelsey, Kylie, Kassie, Abby, Sarah, Grace, Gabe, Faith, and
Hope; the dear brother of Donald (Carol), Tom (Donna), and
Patty Pierson; the fond son-in-law of Marge Pecho; and the
beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
mourn the passing of Robert "Bob" W. Pierson, and extend our

sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
and loved him; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of Robert Pierson as an expression of
our deepest sympathy.
