HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Charles
4"Charlie" W. Dukes of Georgetown, who passed away on June 15,
52021; and
6 WHEREAS, Charlie Dukes was born in Georgetown on March 30,
71923 to Russell and Florence {Taylor} Dukes; he enlisted in
8the Army in 1942; he was wounded and captured on Thanksgiving
9Day in 1944; after his discharge from the Army on December 14,
101945, he finished college and married his college sweetheart,
11Grace Marie Schwab; they had four children, Debra (David)
12Small, Laurie Holman, Kent (Melinda) Dukes, and Robin (Diane)
13Dukes, as well as eight grandchildren and ten
14great-grandchildren and celebrated 71 years together; and
15 WHEREAS, Charlie Dukes worked as a banker and had other
16self-employed ventures; in retirement, he spent his time
17speaking to students as a living link to history; he
18emphasized self-discipline and cautioned young people to guard
19their freedom; and
20 WHEREAS, Charlie Dukes was a lifetime member of American
21Legion Dornblaser Post #203 in Georgetown; he helped to
22establish the Memorial Honor roll located on the square in

1Georgetown where he loved to go camping in his younger years;
2and
3 WHEREAS, Charlie Dukes wrote a book called Good Morning
4(But the Nightmares Never End) in 1997, and it was published;
5the book is a tell-all about his experience of being a POW in
6Germany and is planned to be made into a movie in the future;
7therefore, be it
8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we mourn the passing of Charles "Charlie" W. Dukes and extend
11our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who
12knew and loved him; and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Charlie Dukes as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
