HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize former Illinois State
4Senator Adlai E. III and Nancy Stevenson; and
5 WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson III is the Chairman of the Adlai
6Stevenson Center on Democracy, which he co-founded in 2008 in
7honor of former Illinois Governor Adlai E. Stevenson II; its
8mission is to address challenges to democratic systems of
9government and conceive practical ways of addressing them; and
10 WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson III is the Chairman of the SC&M
11Investment Company; he served in the United States Marine Corps
12during the Korean War; he is a former Illinois Supreme Court
13Justice Clerk, and a former partner in the law firm of Mayer,
14Brown; he served in the Illinois House of Representatives from
151965 to 1967 and as Illinois State Treasurer from 1967 to 1970;
16in 1970, he was elected to the United States Senate and
17re-elected in 1974; he retired from the U.S. Senate in 1981 and
18was the Democratic candidate for Governor of Illinois in 1982
19and 1986; and
20 WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson III has spent much of his private
21life in East Asian public policy and business related venues;
22he has traveled and worked in more than 80 countries, and

1served on many boards and commissions; his honors include the
2Order of the Sacred Treasure with Gold and Silver Star from the
3government of Japan and Honorary Professor of Renmin University
4in China; and
5 WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson III authored "The Black Book",
6about American politics and history as his family knew it over
7five generations; he is a graduate of Harvard College and
8Harvard Law School; and
9 WHEREAS, Nancy Stevenson is President of the Adlai
10Stevenson Center on Democracy; she is Trustee Emerita at the
11University of Chicago, and the former Chair of the Illinois
12Humanities Council and Federation of State Humanities
13Councils; she served as the CEO for Voices for Illinois
14Children; she holds a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College, a
15Master of Arts from American University, and Master of Fine
16Arts from Vermont College (now the Vermont College of Fine
17Arts); and
18 WHEREAS, In 2017, Adlai and Nancy Stevenson will receive
19the "Mikva Legacy Award for Truth & Justice" from the Illinois
20Campaign for Political Reform; they live on their farm in
21northwest Illinois and have four children; therefore, be it
22 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE

1HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
2recognize former Illinois State Senator Adlai E. III and Nancy
3Stevenson and thank them for their community involvement and
4their work for the advancement of democratic ideals of
5government; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to Adlai and Nancy Stevenson.
