HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Barbara
4A. Murphy of Glen Ellyn, who passed away on March 3, 2019; and
5 WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy was born on December 24, 1937 and
6grew up in Connecticut, where she attended Greenwich Academy;
7she attended Skidmore College in New York and settled in Glen
8Ellyn in 1962; and
9 WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy was the longest serving DuPage
10County Republican Chairwoman; she was dedicated to good
11government and the Republican Party; she began her career as a
12volunteer for Richard Nixon's campaign in California in 1960;
13she was the first woman to be elected as a Milton Township
14Trustee and the first woman to be elected as chairman of the
15Milton Township Republican Central Committee; she served under
16Secretaries of State George Ryan and Jesse White as a member of
17the Illinois Motor Vehicle Review Board; she was appointed to
18the Illinois Toll Highway Advisory Board by Governor Jim Edgar
19and served for five years; she was a state central
20committeewoman for the 6th Congressional District in the 1980s;
21most recently, she was on the boards of the DuPage Civic Center
22Authority and the DuPage County Domestic Violence Task Force;

1 WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy was a former co-owner of the Daffy
2Down Dilly gift shop in Glen Ellyn; and
3 WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy was a member of the Inland Western
4Retail Sales Trust Board; she was a founding member of The
5Friends of Family Shelter; and
6 WHEREAS, Barbara Murphy is survived by her sons, David
7(Patti), Jeffrey (Kim), Brooks (Amy), and Bradley (Bridget);
8nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; therefore,
9be it
10 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
11HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we mourn the passing of Barbara A. Murphy and extend our
13sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
14and loved her; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Barbara Murphy as an expression of
17our deepest sympathy.
