HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, On May 22, 2013, the Chicago Board of Education
3voted to close 50 of the system's underutilized public schools;
4and
5 WHEREAS, Many of those properties can continue to be assets
6for the city and their communities; and
7 WHEREAS, City residents and city leadership have a mutual
8interest in strengthening economic activity and increasing
9economic opportunity for an ever-increasing population; and
10 WHEREAS, The Chicago Public Schools Advisory Committee for
11School Repurposing and Community Development has created a set
12of guiding principles and a proposed process for repurposing
13schools into constructive purposes quickly and in a way that is
14both timely and financially viable; and
15 WHEREAS, If these properties cannot be repurposed through
16the Chicago Public School system, they should be opened to
17public bidding; therefore, be it
18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
20urge the City of Chicago to begin repurposing the closed public

3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4delivered to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
