Applies to the election of General Assembly members beginning in the first general election that occurs after that date.

Proposes to amend the Legislature Article of the Illinois Constitution. Prohibits a Representative from serving more than 12 total years. Prohibits a Senator from serving more than 12 total years. Proposes to amend the Executive Article of the Illinois Constitution. Prohibits an executive branch officer from serving more than 3 consecutive terms in the same executive branch office. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
3 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
5SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that there shall be submitted to the
6electors of the State for adoption or rejection at the general
7election next occurring at least 6 months after the adoption of
8this resolution a proposition to amend the Illinois
9Constitution by adding Section 2.5 to Article IV and by
10changing Section 2 of Article 5 as follows:

THE LEGISLATURE
13 (ILCON Art. IV, Sec. 2.5 new)
14SECTION 2.5. TERM LIMITS
15 (a) A person may not serve more than 12 total years of
16office as a Representative.
17 (b) A person may not serve more than 12 total years of
18office as a Senator.
19 (c) A person is considered to serve a term of office for
20the purpose of this Section if the person is elected or
21appointed to serve any portion of the term.

THE EXECUTIVE
2 (ILCON Art. V, Sec. 2)
3SECTION 2. TERMS
4 (a) These elected officers of the Executive Branch shall
5hold office for four years beginning on the second Monday of
6January after their election and, except in the case of the
7Lieutenant Governor, until their successors are qualified.
8They shall be elected at the general election in 1978 and every
9four years thereafter.
10 (b) A person may not serve more than 3 consecutive terms of
11office within the same Executive Branch office.
12 A person is considered to serve a term of office for the
13purpose of this subsection if the person is elected or
14appointed to serve any portion of the term.

SCHEDULE
17 This Constitutional Amendment takes effect upon being
18declared adopted in accordance with Section 7 of the Illinois
19Constitutional Amendment Act and applies to the election of
20members of the General Assembly beginning in the first general
21election that occurs after that date.
