HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Computer Science provides a foundation for
3virtually any career and most people benefit from learning the
4basics of Computer Science; and
5 WHEREAS, Software jobs outnumber Computer Science students
63 to 1 and there is a one million job gap over the past decade
7between open jobs in Computer Science and qualified candidates;
8and
9 WHEREAS, Ninety percent of schools in the United States do
10not teach Computer Science; and
11 WHEREAS, Many countries, including China, Vietnam, and
12Estonia, require Computer Science classes for all students; and
13 WHEREAS, Fewer than 10% of students in the United States
14try to learn basic Computer Science; of these students, only 2%
15are women and only 1% are students of color; and
16 WHEREAS, The week of December 9th through the 15th, 2013 is
17Computer Science Education Week organized by the Computing in
18the Core coalition; therefore, be it
19 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

2SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare December 9, 2013 to
3be Computer Science Education Day in the State of Illinois; and
4be it further
5 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
6presented to all the school districts in the State of Illinois.
