Bill Title: Amends the School Code. Provides that the Chicago Board of Education shall require that schools provide daily recess for all students in kindergarten through grade 8. Provides that recess must be at least 10 minutes in length. Provides that if the principal determines that the weather is inclement, the principal shall direct that a recess be held indoors. Requires the principal to ensure that students are given the opportunity to engage in physical exercise during each recess. Provides that the time required for recesses is included in the minimum number of hours necessary to constitute a full day of attendance under the State aid formula provisions.

1 AN ACT concerning education.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
534-18.45 as follows:
6 (105 ILCS 5/34-18.45 new)
7 Sec. 34-18.45. Recess required in elementary school. The
8board shall require that schools provide daily recess for all
9students in kindergarten through grade 8. A recess must be at
10least 10 minutes in length. If the principal determines that
11the weather is inclement, the principal shall direct that a
12recess be held indoors. The principal shall ensure that
13students are given the opportunity to engage in physical
14exercise during each recess. The time required for recesses by
15this Section is included in the minimum number of hours
16necessary to constitute a full day of attendance under Section
1718-8.05 of this Code.
