                    HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.    
               BY  HEATON, COHOON, KEARNS, and HANSON
  1  1 A Resolution recognizing February 17, 2017, as the
  1  2    175th anniversary of Iowa Wesleyan University.
  1  3    WHEREAS, in the 1840s, the frontier community
  1  4 of Mount Pleasant was zealous for culture and
  1  5 concerned for the educated person, and the Territorial
  1  6 Legislature, being aware of the need for schools, on
  1  7 February 17, 1842, granted a charter for the Mount
  1  8 Pleasant Literary Institute in Henry County; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, one year later, on or before March 8, 1843,
  1 10 twenty=six men from Mount Pleasant signed Articles
  1 11 of Association for the purpose of erecting the Mount
  1 12 Pleasant Collegiate Institute, under the charge of the
  1 13 Methodist Episcopal Church; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, Iowa Wesleyan University proudly continues
  1 15 its affiliation with the United Methodist Church and is
  1 16 recognized as Iowa's first independent, faith=based,
  1 17 coeducational institution of higher learning and one
  1 18 of the oldest of its type west of the Mississippi
  1 19 River; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, today, Iowa Wesleyan University has grown
  1 21 into a top=tier university in the Midwest region of
  1 22 the United States and serves students of all ages
  1 23 and cultures and provides numerous educational,
  1 24 cultural, and athletic opportunities for personal and
  1 25 professional growth; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, Mount Pleasant, along with the state
  1 27 of Iowa, is home to its university of 175 years and
  1 28 proudly celebrates the incredible and lasting legacy of
  2  1 one of the nation's most historic universities; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, Iowa Wesleyan University is an innovator
  2  3 among private colleges in embracing the expansion of
  2  4 quality, flexible graduate and professional programs
  2  5 as a way to meet our economy's need for an ever more
  2  6 sophisticated and well=prepared workforce in the region
  2  7 of southeast Iowa and beyond; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  8    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2  9 That the House of Representatives recognizes February
  2 10 17, 2017, as the 175th anniversary of Iowa Wesleyan
  2 11 University.
