SMITH , COHOON , WITTNEBEN , WINCKLER , THEDE , HANSON , KAJTAZOVIC , HEDDENS , and DEYOE A Resolution remembering and honoring the Tuskegee 1 Airmen. 2 WHEREAS, at a time when the United States is again 3 combating terrorism, it is good to remember an earlier 4 time when bloodshed and terror surrounded the globe, 5 and Americans stepped forward and put themselves in 6 harm’s way —— among them were the Tuskegee Airmen; and 7 WHEREAS, at the dawn of World War II the 66th 8 Air Force Flying School at Tuskegee Institute was 9 established to train African-American pilots for the 10 war; and 11 WHEREAS, almost 1,000 African-Americans trained at 12 the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama, and 13 450 of the men were sent overseas for combat duty; and 14 WHEREAS, these pilots were known as “Tuskegee 15 Airmen” and were nicknamed “Red-Tail Angels” after the 16 red tail markings on their aircraft; and 17 WHEREAS, the 99th Fighter Squadron was sent to 18 North Africa in the spring of 1943 for combat duty and 19 in 1944, they were joined by other African-American 20 -1- LSB 5726HH (4) 84 jr/rj 1/ 2
H.R. 105 squadrons to form the 332nd Fighter Squadron, which 21 flew missions over Sicily, the Mediterranean, and North 22 Africa; and 23 WHEREAS, the Tuskegee Airmen compiled an outstanding 24 record, completing more than 1,500 missions, destroying 25 260 enemy aircraft, sinking an enemy destroyer, and 26 demolishing other enemy installations; and 27 WHEREAS, during the war, 66 Tuskegee Airmen were 28 killed in action and 32 were held as prisoners of 1 war; and 2 WHEREAS, through their exploits the Tuskegee Airmen 3 helped end segregation in the military; and 4 WHEREAS, the Tuskegee Airmen were awarded numerous 5 honors, including the Congressional Gold Medal, awarded 6 during a ceremony with President George W.
