                    HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.    
                             BY  BAXTER
  1  1 A Resolution honoring the over 200 years of peace,
  1  2    prosperity, and kinship between the peoples of
  1  3    Canada and the United States, and recognizing March
  1  4    15, 2017, as Canada Day at the Iowa Capitol.
  1  5    WHEREAS, Canada and the United States share a
  1  6 5,500=mile border, the world's longest unmilitarized
  1  7 border, over which 400,000 people cross between the
  1  8 countries every day; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, our two nations share a peaceful and
  1 10 democratic heritage which spans centuries; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, with these shared traditions, values, and
  1 12 heritage our two nations have fostered one of the most
  1 13 successful international relationships in the modern
  1 14 world; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, acting as partners in peace and allies in
  1 16 war, for over 100 years Canada and the United States
  1 17 have stood together, promoting mutual prosperity and
  1 18 fighting tyranny and terrorism in a partnership that
  1 19 remains resolute today; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, the United States is Canada's largest
  1 21 export market, with two=way trade in goods and
  1 22 services between the nations totaling almost $700
  1 23 billion in 2015, or approximately $1.9 billion every
  1 24 day, reflecting the deep integration of our nations'
  1 25 economies; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, the relationship between Canada and
  1 27 Iowa is equally strong, consisting of a complex and
  1 28 growing network of social, economic, and even familial
  2  1 ties; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, it is estimated that over 100,000 jobs
  2  3 in Iowa are supported by trade and investment with
  2  4 Canada; and
  2  5    WHEREAS, Canada is Iowa's top export market, with
  2  6 the latest estimates of Iowa exports to Canada valued
  2  7 annually at $3.8 billion and the latest estimates
  2  8 of Iowa imports from Canada valued annually at $2.8
  2  9 billion; and
  2 10    WHEREAS, Iowa exports to Canada include steel
  2 11 products, oilseed cake and meal, organic chemicals,
  2 12 air conditioning and refrigeration units, and
  2 13 tractors, while Iowa imports include natural gas, oils,
  2 14 fertilizers, live animals, and steel products; NOW
  2 15 THEREFORE,
  2 16    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That
  2 17 the House of Representatives honors the relationships
  2 18 between the peoples and the governments of Canada,
  2 19 the United States, and Iowa, friends and neighbors
  2 20 in peace, allies in war, and partners in economic
  2 21 prosperity; and
  2 22    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That in honor of our strong
  2 23 and growing relationship, the House of Representatives
  2 24 recognizes Wednesday, March 15, 2017, as Canada Day at
  2 25 the Iowa Capitol.
