SENATE RESOLUTION
ENCOURAGING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO ESTABLISH At least one SERVICE LEARNING COORDINATOR IN EACH PUBLIC SCHOOL.
WHEREAS, the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse defines service learning as "a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities"; and
WHEREAS, service learning is an effective method of developing civic responsibility, service ethic, and leadership and social skills while enhancing classroom learning; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's schools currently engage in service learning projects, supported by a comprehensive student support system established by Board of Education Policy No. 2203, with one of its main functions being the involvement of families and community stakeholders as partners in the education process; and
WHEREAS, service learning efforts should be encouraged and further developed, and designating at least one person at each public school as a service learning coordinator would encourage and further develop service learning; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, that the Department of Education is encouraged to designate at least one service learning coordinator at each public school; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the designated service learning coordinator at each public school:
(1) Coordinate service learning projects for students at that school;
(2) Integrate service learning projects with the curriculum so that service learning projects enhance classroom learning;
(3) Pursue potential service learning opportunities for students at that school; and
(4) Promote civic engagement and greater collaborative interaction between students and the community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education, the Chairperson of the Board of Education, and the President of the Board of Directors of the Hawaii State PTSA.
