SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

Officially RecognizING the seventy-fiftH anniversary of the united nations.

 

 


     WHEREAS, in response to World War II and the resulting divisiveness created around the globe, the United Nations was established in 1945; and

 

     WHEREAS, for seventy-five years the United Nations has been dedicated to establishing the international standard for multi‑culturalism, international peace and security, human rights, social and economic well-being, and  sustainability; and

 

     WHEREAS, on June 14, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations under the theme, "The future we want, the United Nations we need:  reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism", thus encouraging input, conversation, constructive reflection, and collective priority to raise awareness, and mobilization of greater support to achieve the future we need; and

 

     WHEREAS, the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, born at the United Nations Conference in Rio de Janeiro, requires cooperation across borders, sectors, and generations; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii is in alignment with the goals of the United Nations and committed to supporting the global campaigns set forth for environmental sustainability and human welfare; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that the State of Hawaii officially recognizes the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that citizens of Hawaii are encouraged to participate in activities commemorating the milestone anniversary of the United Nations throughout 2020; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the United States Congress, State of Hawaii, local public officials, and civic leaders are respectfully urged to join in a concerted national effort to support the principles and vital work of the United Nations; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that educational institutions and local media are encouraged to highlight the importance of the United Nations, its history, mission, accomplishments and goals; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Majority Leader of the United States Senate; Speaker of the United States House of Representatives; Hawaii's congressional delegation; Governor of the State of Hawaii; Comptroller; Chairperson of the Board of Agriculture; Attorney General; Director of Finance; Director of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs; Adjutant General; Chairperson of the Board of Education; Superintendent of Education; Chairperson of the Hawaiian Homes Commission; Director of Health; Director of Human Resources Development; Director of Human Services; Director of Labor and Industrial Relations; Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources; Director of Public Safety; Director of Taxation; Director of Transportation; President of the University of Hawaii System; Administrator of the State Procurement Office; Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu; Mayor of the County of Maui; Mayor of the County of Hawaii; Mayor of the County of Kauai; Chairperson of the Honolulu City Council; Chairperson of the Maui County Council; Chairperson of the Hawaii County Council; Chairperson of the Kauai County Council.
