SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
recognizing the month of september as sepsis awareness month in hawaii, and the thirteenth day in september of every year as hawaii sepsis day.
WHEREAS, sepsis is a serious medical condition that is caused by an overwhelming immune response to infection, whereby immune chemicals released into the blood to combat infection trigger widespread inflammation; and
WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sepsis affects more than one million Americans each year, kills up to half of them, and is the ninth-leading cause of disease-related death in the nation; and
WHEREAS, despite the severe danger and widespread occurrence of this illness, a survey conducted by the Sepsis Alliance found that fewer than half of all Americans have heard of the term sepsis; and
WHEREAS, recognizing more attention could be drawn to sepsis and sepsis awareness if there was a specific month dedicated to the cause, the Sepsis Alliance established the month of September as Sepsis Awareness Month in 2011; and
WHEREAS, Sepsis Awareness Month is also observed and supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, the Global Sepsis Alliance declared September 13 to be World Sepsis Day, bringing together people in the healthcare community and members of the public to recognize that sepsis is a global problem; and
WHEREAS, the current outbreak of dengue fever in Hawaii County further necessitates heightened attention to sepsis, as dengue shock syndrome is a type of sepsis; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, the House of Representatives concurring, that the month of September of every year is hereby recognized as Sepsis Awareness Month, and the thirteenth day in September of every year is hereby recognized as Hawaii Sepsis Day; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to Hawaii's congressional delegation, the Governor, and the Director of Health.
