A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to higher education.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 304A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§304A-    Service members; veterans; priority course registration; academic credit.  (a)  A service member or veteran who is living in the State and attending any campus of the University of Hawaii system shall be granted priority in registering for courses; provided that the priority course registration shall occur using the same procedures used by other segments of the student population, if any, that are offered priority registration.

     (b)  The board of regents shall adopt a policy, consistent with section 304A-802, to award a minimum of six academic credits to a veteran upon the veteran's enrollment in a course of study.

     (c)  For the purposes of this section:

     "Service member" means an individual who is serving on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States, a reserve component thereof, or the Hawaii national guard.

     "Veteran" means an individual who served on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States, a reserve component thereof, or the Hawaii national guard, and who was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from active service."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
