A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO RELIGIOUS FREEDOM DAY IN HAWAII.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that religious conflict is one of the most dangerous social conditions in the world and religiously motivated violence is a threat to world peace and economic stability. During a time of increasing religious strife, it is important to build public awareness and support for religious freedom and to learn to live together despite religious differences. Religious freedom recognizes the right of each person to determine their own religion, or lack thereof, the right to associate and assemble together for public worship, and the right to change one's religious belief.
SECTION 2. Chapter 8, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§8- Religious freedom day in Hawaii. The second Saturday in July of each year shall be known and designated as "Religious Freedom Day in Hawaii". This day is not and shall not be construed as a state holiday."
SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
