HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Supporting the declaration of VOLCANIC rock as THE HAWAII STATE ROCK.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, volcanic rock, also known as volcanics, is formed from magma erupted from a volcano and is characterized by a fine-grained vesicular texture and clinker surface; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaiian Islands are volcanic in origin, with each Hawaiian island being made of at least one primary volcano; and

 

     WHEREAS, volcanoes and volcanic rock have a deep and rich cultural significance to Native Hawaiians and residents of the State; and

 

     WHEREAS, the majesty and beauty of volcanoes, both active and inactive, are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike; and

 

     WHEREAS, over half of the states in the United States have recognized a state rock or stone; and

 

     WHEREAS, the recognition of a volcanic rock as the state rock in Hawaii could promote interest in and respect of Hawaii's geology, geography, and culture; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, that the Legislature declares volcanic rock as the state rock to honor the creation of the Hawaiian Islands and the cultural significance of Hawaii's geology; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the Senate President,


the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
