HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

COMMEMORATING THE 90th ANNIVERSARY OF HONOLULU COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

 

 

 


WHEREAS, the State recognizes certain organizations in the community who have contributed significantly to the education and wellbeing of these Islands; and

 

WHEREAS, HONOLULU COMMUNITY COLLEGE, the State's first vocational school, opened its doors to 42 students on February 2, 1920, when called "the Territorial Trade School" located at the old Chinese Hospital in Palama; and

 

WHEREAS, HONOLULU COMMUNITY COLLEGE has experienced several name changes in its history, from the Territorial Trade School, to the Smith-Hughes Department of McKinley High School, then to Honolulu Vocational School, and finally to Honolulu Technical School, before attaining its present moniker in 1965; and

 

WHEREAS, HONOLULU COMMUNITY COLLEGE became part of the University of Hawai‘i System as a result of the Community College Act of 1964, upon which it formally transitioned from vocational school to community college in 1966 with the authority to grant Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees; and

 

WHEREAS, HONOLULU COMMUNITY COLLEGE has a current student population of over 4,500 and offers a comprehensive liberal arts program, 23 trade programs, and many other specialty areas of instruction, some unique only to the College, such as Music Enterprise Learning Experience, Fire and Environmental Emergency Response, Small Vessel Fabrication and Repair, Aeronautics and Maintenance Technology, Diesel Mechanics Technology, in addition to housing the only Pilot Training program and Aviation Mechanics program in the Pacific Region; and

 

WHEREAS, HONOLULU COMMUNITY COLLEGE has strengthened the fabric of our society and contributed to the betterment of our community through its focused commitment to providing educational and economic opportunities for our people including the traditionally underserved and often first-generation in our population, enabling many to become productive members of an integral community; and

 

WHEREAS, HONOLULU COMMUNITY COLLEGE has now been a landmark and community pillar for ninety years—improving the lives of a diverse student population on the Island of O'ahu, and offering one of the best educational values in the United States—and commits to uphold its tradition of delivering excellence in higher education from this 90th anniversary and onward; now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawai'i that the members of this body hereby recognize and congratulate the administration, including current Chancellor Michael T. Rota, Vice-Chancellor Erika Lacro, former Chancellor Ramsey R. Pedersen, along with the faculty, staff and students, both past and present, of HONOLULU COMMUNITY COLLEGE on the occasion of its 90th Anniversary, and further offer their heartfelt gratitude and thanks for their outstanding contributions to the community and to higher education in Hawai'i and send them their warmest aloha and best wishes in all future endeavors.
