STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING, HONORING, AND CELEBRATING NATIVE HAWAIIANS AND THE CONTRIBUTIONS THEY have MADE TO THE ARTS, SCIENCES, AND OVERALL CULTURE OF HAWAII.

WHEREAS, the Kānaka Maoli of the lands that would later become known as Hawaii have occupied these lands since time immemorial, and Hawaii is built upon the homelands and communities of the Indigenous Peoples of this region, without whom the building of the State would not be possible; and

WHEREAS, we value the many contributions made to our communities through Native Hawaiians' knowledge, labor, science, philosophy, art, and the deep cultural contributions that have substantially shaped the character of Hawaii, noting significant contributions to voyaging, music, and dance; and

WHEREAS, the State recognizes that historically, Native Hawaiians have experienced the loss of land, language, religion, and sovereignty and, as acknowledged in the State Constitution and Hawaii Admission Act, resources should be utilized to further the conditions of Native Hawaiians; and

WHEREAS, the State opposes systematic racism toward Native Hawaiians and promotes policies and practices that reflect the experiences of Native Hawaiians, ensure greater access and opportunity, and honor the State's Native Hawaiian roots, history, and contributions; and

WHEREAS, the State recognizes the fact that Hawaii is one ohana and everyone must show aloha to one another; and

WHEREAS, the State honors the Hawaiian values of Akahai, Lōkahi, OluOlu, Haahaa, and Ahonui, which resonate with and serve as a model for us all; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, that this body hereby recognizes and honors Native Hawaiians for their accomplishments in arts and sciences, voices its pride over everything our Hawaiian culture encompasses, and extends its deepest gratitude to all who came before us, paving the way for this Year of the Native Hawaiians.
