HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the city and county of HONOLULU TO ESTABLISH AN IROQUOIS POINT FERRY TASK FORCE TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF ESTABLISHING A REGULAR FERRY SERVICE BETWEEN KAPILINA MARINA AND ALOHA TOWER.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, many residents of Iroquois Point and other West Oahu neighborhoods typically spend more than an hour in morning weekday traffic traveling to downtown Honolulu and another hour driving home at the end of the workday; and

 

WHEREAS, the residents of Iroquois Point have limited access to public transit services and other alternatives to driving; and

 

     WHEREAS, providing the residents of Iroquois Point with an alternative to driving through traffic for more than two hours, five days per week, would not only improve their quality of life, but would also help to reduce traffic throughout West Oahu; and

 

     WHEREAS, a waterborne transportation option from Iroquois Point to downtown Honolulu has the potential to attract numerous commuters from West Oahu; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu is requested to establish an Iroquois Point Ferry Task Force to study the feasibility of establishing a regular ferry service between Kapilina Marina and Aloha Tower Marketplace, including logistical and financial issues; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, or the Mayor's designee, is requested to serve as the chairperson of the task force; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the membership of the task force is requested to include:

 

     (1)  The Deputy Director of Transportation, Harbors Division, or the Deputy Director's designee; and

 

     (2)  Other individuals with knowledge of the needs of West Oahu residents or expertise in public or nautical transportation, who shall be invited by the Mayor to become members of the task force; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force is requested to submit a report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2020; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Transportation and the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu.
