WHEREAS, the newly designed WAIPAHU HIGH SCHOOL Marauder field is named after Waipahu's Athletic Director and football coach from 1954 through 1970, the late Masa Yonamine, who compiled a record of 120 wins, 61 losses, and 9 ties, including three Rural Oahu Interscholastic Association championships; he also coached the Marauders to eight league baseball titles, including four straight from 1954 through 1957; and

WHEREAS, the 10th-ranked 2018 WAIPAHU HIGH SCHOOL Marauders dethroned the defending state champion Hilo Vikings 42 to 22, to win their first-ever First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) Division I Football State Championship at Aloha Stadium on November 24, 2018; and

WHEREAS, adding to their impressive offensive performance, the Marauders' defense registered 11 total sacks and held the Vikings to a season-low minus 35 net rushing yards and 178 yards of offense; and

WHEREAS, the strength, speed, and teamwork displayed throughout WAIPAHU HIGH SCHOOL's entire football season reflect the exemplary leadership and abilities of head coach and offensive coordinator Bryson Carvalho, defensive coordinator Ron Johnson, special teams coordinator Siva Savini, and the rest of the coaches and staff; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the 2018 state title, the Marauders now have won two Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) titles in a row; overall, Waipahu has 13 league titles, including 10 in Division I; and

WHEREAS, while the WAIPAHU HIGH SCHOOL Marauders football team and coaching staff deserve recognition for their outstanding performance this past season, the Waipahu community also deserves recognition for their unwavering support for the team and all of the school's sports programs; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that this body hereby recognizes and congratulates the WAIPAHU HIGH SCHOOL Marauders and the Marauders' "ohana" on winning the 2018 HHSAA Division I Varsity Football Championship Title and extends to them its best wishes for continued success in all future seasons.
