HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

CONGRATULATING CHELSEA MASAKI, RYAN PARK, CATHERINE CHOW, AND STEFANI SAKAMOTO AS THE 2019 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY award RECIPIENTS.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is the largest youth recognition program in the United States based exclusively upon volunteer community service; through outstanding community service efforts, middle and high school students realize the importance of philanthropy at the local, state, and national levels in making a difference in their community; and

 

     WHEREAS, CHELSEA MASAKI dedicates her time to cleanup activities and efforts to educate the community about the dangers of plastic pollution; on her website, she shares information about cleanup opportunities, concerns about environmental issues, and works to educate the community through speaking engagements about plastic pollution with elementary school students at the Waikiki aquarium; and

 

     WHEREAS, RYAN PARK established the non-profit organization and school club HOPE (Helping Oncology Patients Everywhere) in 2018, after back pain revealed a benign tumor on the left side of his tailbone; HOPE helps to improve lives of people who live with cancer as well as their family members through musical recitals at treatment centers, raising money to buy gifts for cancer patients, and participating in national cancer-related fundraising drives; and

 

     WHEREAS, CATHERINE CHOW led a community effort to cultivate a garden for Hale Iki Village following the 2018 Kilauea eruption on the island of Hawaii; her desire to help evacuees now living at Hale Iki Village inspired volunteers from local churches, Kea‘au High School students, and her 4-H groups to contribute to the efforts which resulted in the creation of a thriving garden for residents; and

 

     WHEREAS, STEFANI SAKAMOTO is a member of the Girl Scouts of Hawaii with a passion for wellness and healthy eating and founded the nutrition education program ALOHA (A Life of Healthy Action), which reaches over 200 children and their families; the program encourages the community to take a pledge to make healthy food and lifestyle choices; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that this body hereby commends, congratulates, and honors CHELSEA MASAKI, RYAN PARK, CATHERINE CHOW, and STEFANI SAKAMOTO for their leadership in the community and much deserved award recognition, and extends to them its sincere mahalo and best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.
