HOUSE RESOLUTION
URGING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE TO ALLOW "FLYOVERS" TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE ARMED FORCES DAY, MEMORIAL DAY, VETERANS DAY, AND THE ANNIVERSARY OF PEARL HARBOR.
WHEREAS, President Harry S. Truman established Armed Forces Day, a holiday celebrated on the third Saturday in May, to honor and thank military members for their patriotic service to our country; and
WHEREAS, Memorial Day, a day for remembering and honoring military members who have given the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country, is celebrated on the last Monday in May; and
WHEREAS, the Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, one of America's most widely-recognized and historic days; and
WHEREAS, November 11, Veterans Day, is a day to honor and thank all who have served our country; and
WHEREAS, military flyovers are a sign of honor, respect, and remembrance of our armed forces; and
WHEREAS, military flyovers have been conducted at sporting events for years and these events do not hold the honor or importance that these days of remembrance do; and
WHEREAS, Department of Defense Form 2535, the form used for requesting flyovers, states that eligible uses include holidays such as Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Independence Day, but does not mention sporting events; and
WHEREAS, these nationally known and observed
holidays should be honored with flyovers regardless of whether a form has been
filled out; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh
Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that the President
of the United States and the Secretary of Defense are urged to allow
"flyovers" on Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and the
Anniversary of Pearl Harbor as a sign of honor, respect, and remembrance; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States and the United States Secretary of Defense.
