HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the department of public works of the county of maui to install new, and improve existing, crosswalks on lower honoapiilani road and in areas of west maui having high pedestrian traffic.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, according to the Department of Transportation, between January 1, 2019, and December 23, 2019, there were thirty-six traffic-related pedestrian fatalities in the State, seven of which occurred in the County of Maui; and

 

     WHEREAS, residents of West Maui have expressed concern over the lack of adequate crosswalks on Lower Honoapiilani Road and the need for improved lighting for all crosswalks in West Maui; and

 

     WHEREAS, this lack of adequate crosswalks on Lower Honoapiilani Road has caused numerous instances in which pedestrians were almost struck by vehicles traveling along Lower Honoapiilani Road; and

 

     WHEREAS, in one instance, a resident was forced to jump in front of a moving vehicle to alert the driver to the presence of a child crossing the roadway; and

 

     WHEREAS, installing new, and updating existing, crosswalks in West Maui would help to protect residents and prevent pedestrian injuries and fatalities; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that the Department of Public Works of the County of Maui is requested to install new, and improve existing, crosswalks along Lower Honoapiilani Road and in areas of West Maui having high pedestrian traffic; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Public Works of the County of Maui is requested to equip all crosswalks with improved lighting and install pedestrian crossing alert systems at all crosswalks installed or improved in response to this measure; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Director of the Department of Public Works of the County of Maui.
