HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO ESTABLISH A HAWAII COMMISSION ON THE UNITED STATES SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL BY EXECUTIVE ORDER.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, July 4, 2026, marks the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States of America; and

 

     WHEREAS, to observe this momentous occasion, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, established by Congress under the United States Semiquincentennial Commission Act of 2016 (Public Law 114-196), was created to provide for the observance and commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States and related events; and

 

     WHEREAS, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission is tasked with:

 

     (1)  Preparing an overall program for commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States and the historic events preceding the anniversary; and

 

     (2)  Planning, encouraging, developing, and coordinating observances and activities commemorating the historic events that preceded, and are associated with, the United States Semiquincentennial; and

 

     WHEREAS, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and the America250 Foundation, the nonprofit partner of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, are working to organize and facilitate the observance of this historical American milestone; and

 

     WHEREAS, according to the America250 Foundation, eighteen states have created commissions to join in America250's efforts to mark America's 250th anniversary of independence on July 4, 2026; and

 

     WHEREAS, to appropriately take part in America's semiquincentennial celebration, it is fitting that the State of Hawaii establish a commission to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States of America by having the Hawaii commission plan and coordinate commemorations and observances of this nationwide celebration; and

 

     WHEREAS, a Hawaii Commission on the United States Semiquincentennial will serve as a necessary part of encouraging the people of Hawaii to not only participate in this momentous and celebratory occasion but also remember the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a promising future for the United States; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, that the Governor is requested to establish a Hawaii Commission on the United States Semiquincentennial by Executive Order; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii Commission on the United States Semiquincentennial coordinate a statewide effort commemorating and celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor of the State of Hawaii, the Chairman of the United States Semiquincentennial Commission, and the Executive Director of the United States Semiquincentennial Commission.
