HOUSE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THREE HAWAIIAN CULTURE PRACTITIONERS WHO HAVE BROUGHT SIGNIFICANCE TO THE STATE OF HAWAI'I BY PERPETUATING AND PRACTICING IDEOLOGIES INSPIRED BY THE LAND, THE SEA, AND BY THE ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS UPON WHICH THE STATE WAS BUILT.

WHEREAS, it is important to honor those who have made cultural contributions to the State of Hawaii, and to remember the tireless efforts of those advocates who have also dedicated their lives to perpetuating the richness of Hawaii's tradition, history, and identity; and

WHEREAS, three cultural practitioners deserve recognition for truly exemplifying the "practice what you preach" lifestyle, living and working by the traditions of their bloodline in a modern-day Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, TWINKLE BORGE, celebrated both nationally and internationally, is a 10-year resident and leader of Puuhonua O Waianae Village who governs a "houseless", safe-zoned community of nearly 260 people with strength and compassion, leading a self-sustaining, successful livelihood on the land of her ancestors while practicing puuhonua, one of  Hawaii's most valued ideologies; and

WHEREAS, SAM K. KAPOI, a crewmember of the beloved Hawaiian voyaging canoe Hōkūlea, travels with his colleagues upon the sea, navigating the world's oceans, visiting every port of cultural significance, spreading a message of goodwill, and reminding all that although the skies are as old as time, they still have much to teach for those who would listen; and

WHEREAS, GLEN KILA founded the Koa Ike Foundation to preserve a cultural lifestyle while teaching modern-day life skills and converted Kamaile Academy into a public charter school in 2007, and still today, he continues to embody the foundation's core values; and

WHEREAS, these three Hawaiian culture preservationists will continue their work to carry on the ways of their forefathers, teaching cultural sensitivity and the stories told by the land, the sea, and the teachers of long ago; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that this body hereby honors TWINKLE BORGE, SAM K. KAPOI, and GLEN KILA for giving an identity to those in the State who would not have otherwise known about the treasures of their heritage.
