THIRTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2021

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

urging THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU TO LEASE THE OLD HAUULA FIRE STATION TO KOOLAULOA HEALTH CENTER.

WHEREAS, in 2019, the City and County of Honolulu relocated Hauula Fire Station from its original site along Kamehameha Highway to a new facility on Kawaipuna Street; and

WHEREAS, the relocation of the fire station has created an opportunity for the City and County of Honolulu to repurpose the Hauula Fire Station's former site in a manner that will most benefit the Hauula community and its more than three thousand residents; and

WHEREAS, because the site of the old Hauula Fire Station, which is owned by the State but under the control of the City and County of Honolulu, was originally provided to the City and County of Honolulu for use as a fire station, a change of use may require approval from the Board of Land and Natural Resources; and

WHEREAS, Hauula and surrounding communities are medically underserved; and

WHEREAS, the Koolauloa Health Center provides critically needed and comprehensive quality care in a number of areas, including primary care services, family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, minor surgery, immunizations, family planning, gynecological care, behavioral health services, pharmacy services, and dental services; and

WHEREAS, the Koolauloa Health Center also provides a variety of community outreach services aimed at tobacco cessation, diabetes prevention, and care coordination; and

WHEREAS, in addition, the Koolauloa Health Center helps its clients access critical services, including health insurance, financial assistance, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; and

WHEREAS, the City and County of Honolulu should do everything it can to assist Koolauloa Health Center in fulfilling its essential role in keeping the Koolauloa community healthy; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2021, the Senate concurring, that the City and County of Honolulu is urged to lease the site of the former Hauula Fire Station, located at 54-064 Kamehameha Highway (TMK 1-5-4-001-045), to Koolauloa Health Center to assist the Center in providing essential health services to the residents of Hauula and the surrounding Koolauloa community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Chairperson of the Honolulu City Council, President of the Board of Directors of the Koolauloa Health Center, and Chief Executive Officer of the Koolauloa Health Center.
