HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the Hawaii state foundation on culture and the arts to commission a monument to president barack obama.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Barack Hussein Obama, the forty-fourth President of the United States of America, was born to Barack Obama, Sr., and Ann Dunham on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii; and

 

WHEREAS, President Obama spent his formative middle and high school years as a student at Punahou School in Honolulu; and

 

     WHEREAS, the substantial and diverse educational, social, and cultural foundation provided during his time in Hawaii led President Obama to eventually become a community organizer dedicated to social justice, graduate magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, serve as a United States Senator from Illinois, and in 2008, be elected the first African American president in United States history; and

 

     WHEREAS, under President Obama's leadership, the United States economy thrived, the national deficit shrank by two-thirds, the national unemployment rate dropped below 5.3 percent, and the landmark Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed, enabling more than sixteen million Americans to obtain affordable and quality health care; and

 

     WHEREAS, President Obama is one of a select and esteemed group of individuals of African American heritage who have had an integral role in the history of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, President Obama continues to serve as an example to the people of Hawaii of the important values of public service and multicultural heritage; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, the Senate concurring, that the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is requested to commission a commemorative monument to President Barack Obama, to be located at an appropriate and easily accessible public space; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is requested to submit a report to the Legislature of its plans, designs, and potential sites for the commemorative monument no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2020; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Executive Director of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
