HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
requesting that the University of Hawaii expand the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to include all of the campuses within the UNiversity of Hawaii system.
WHEREAS, our kupuna, or senior members of our society, are an important component of our society, contributing wisdom and depth to our communities; and
WHEREAS, according to the United States Department of Labor, the population of people aged 65 to 69 years old will rise by 37 percent from 2010 to 2020, while the number of people aged 70 years and older will rise by 38 percent nationwide; and
WHEREAS, the rising number of people aged 75 and older is exponentially greater in the State of Hawaii with an increase of 116 percent from 1990 to 2012; and
WHEREAS, along with the wisdom and experience that come with age, declines in mental and physical health, such as those resulting from dementia and Alzheimer's disease, can also occur; and
WHEREAS, Jean Carper’s book, "100 Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer's and Age-Related Memory Loss" lists continuing education as one of the ways to maintain mental health; and
WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii has established a program called the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, to help our kupuna stay mentally active by giving them an opportunity to take classes free of charge; and
WHEREAS, this program is currently only available at the Manoa campus of the University of Hawaii on the south side of Oahu; and
WHEREAS, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute should be expanded to all campuses of the University of Hawaii System so that more kupuna have access to the program; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the Senate concurring, that the University of Hawaii is requested to expand the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to include all of the campuses within the University of Hawaii System; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, Interim President of the University of Hawaii, and the Interim Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of Hawaii.
