HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

APPROVING THE SELECTION OF GEORGE RYOICHI ARIYOSHI TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE ALOHA ORDER OF MERIT.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, George Ryoichi Ariyoshi embodies the Aloha Spirit, actively demonstrating the values of akahai, lōkahi, oluolu, haahaa, and ahonui in his deeds and interactions with local, national, and international leaders and in cross-cultural friendships; and

 

     WHEREAS, George Ryoichi Ariyoshi is a dedicated public servant and educator, who served as the Lieutenant Governor of the State from 1970 to 1974 and Governor of the State from 1974 to 1986; and

 

     WHEREAS, George Ryoichi Ariyoshi is Hawaii's longest-serving governor and the first Asian-American to be elected governor of a United States state or territory; and

 

     WHEREAS, George Ryoichi Ariyoshi received the high honor of the Japanese government's Grand Cordon of the Sacred Treasure, First Class; and

 

     WHEREAS, George Ryoichi Ariyoshi contributed significantly to international relations during his term on the East-West Center Foundation Board of Directors; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Legislature established the Aloha Order of Merit in 1993 to honor certain individuals, and section 5-7.6, Hawaii Revised Statutes, provides in relevant part that "[h]onorees shall have:

 

(1)  Achieved national or international recognition in their field either by a single event or by the totality of their work that has been either pioneering in their field or that has been outstanding in the long-term; and

 

(2)  (A)  Contributed to the attainment of statehood for    Hawaii;

 

     (B)  Devoted themselves to the betterment of the      State, embodying the concept of the Aloha Spirit;

 

     (C)  Provided extraordinary service to the State; or

 

     (D)  Brought honor to the State"; and

 

     WHEREAS, George Ryoichi Ariyoshi has achieved national and international recognition as a statesman through the totality of his work, which has been outstanding; and

 

     WHEREAS, George Ryoichi Ariyoshi has devoted himself to the betterment of the State while embodying the concept of the Aloha Spirit, has provided extraordinary service to the State, and has brought honor to the State; and

 

     WHEREAS, George Ryoichi Ariyoshi meets all requirements necessary to be inducted as a member of the Aloha Order of Merit; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature approves the selection of George Ryoichi Ariyoshi to be inducted into the Aloha Order of Merit; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Office of the Governor and former Governor George Ryoichi Ariyoshi.
