HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

RECOGNIZING THE THIRTY-DAY PERIOD FROM THE LAST SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER TO THE LAST SUNDAY IN OCTOBER AS MALAMA PU‘ULOA MONTH.

 

 

 

     WHEREAS, based on radiocarbon dating, also known as Carbon-14 dating, the oldest settlement on Oahu is in present-day West Loch area; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Nanaulu family, one of the first settlers in Hawaii from Tahiti, settled in an area originally known as Keawalauopu‘uloa, or "the many harbors of Pu‘uloa," in 400 A.D.; and

 

     WHEREAS, many areas in Pu‘uloa in the greater ‘Ewa region are important sites in Hawaiian history; and

 

WHEREAS, Pu‘uloa in ‘Ewa was the only moku in which all rivers in the twelve ahupua‘a flowed to one place; and

 

     WHEREAS, ‘Ewa was the center of government during ancient times and was the location of ancient political capitals, including Lihue, Waikele, Lepau, and Pu‘uloa; and

 

     WHEREAS, many important historical figures were from ‘Ewa and Pu‘uloa, such as Kalaniopu‘u, who was the grandfather of Kamehemeha, and Kalaimanuia, who served as the second female moi chiefess of the island of Oahu; and

 

     WHEREAS, current residents in ‘Ewa are planning service activities and community gatherings, including events in Kapapapuhi Point Park, with the purpose of restoring Pu‘uloa back to its original state; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, the Senate concurring, that this body recognizes the thirty-day period from the last Saturday in September to the last Sunday in October as "Malama Pu‘uloa Month" and celebrates one of the first settlement sites on Oahu; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.
