HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the board of education and department of education to establish the position of administrative vice principal  dean of students for the lahainaluna high SCHOOL boarding program.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Lahainaluna High School is a public school located on the Island of Maui that serves approximately one thousand students; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program, founded in 1836, offers students the opportunity to take advantage of the school's academic offerings and the many community, club, athletic, and work programs; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program welcomes students from across the State and internationally who are interested in a Lahainaluna education and boarding life experience; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program is committed to its students and their development as leaders and self-sustaining contributors to society; and

 

     WHEREAS, the management of the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program poses a unique endeavor that traditionally trained principals may not be experienced in; and

 

     WHEREAS, a Lahainaluna Boarding Department Working Group was convened in October of 2014 to develop a vision, mission, and purpose for the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Lahainaluna Boarding Department Working Group made several recommendations for the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program, including:

 

     (1)  Continuing funding for the Boarding Program;

 

     (2)  Implementing certain programs and courses that provide direction to give the Boarding Program the capacity to move forward into the future;

 

     (3)  Enhancing and sustaining the system of the living center experiences and the hands-on, project-based learning experiences of the Boarding Program geared for the 21st century and founded in the culture of Hawaii, providing a highly unique educational experience not available through any other public high school;

 

     (4)  Exploring a public-private partnership to procure and install a sustainable alternative renewable energy system for the Boarding Program facilities to eliminate the high cost of electricity required for the Boarding Program; and

 

     (5)  Expanding community and alumni partnerships to augment funding for the Boarding Program; and

 

     WHEREAS, an administrative vice principal dean of students for the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program will create a point position to implement immediate oversight and staffing needs for the Boarding Program; and

 

     WHEREAS, an administrative vice principal dean of students for the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program will also allow for the implementation of the Lahainaluna Boarding Department Working Group's recommendations and provide coordination for the Boarding Program to better respond to the Boarding Program students' needs; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, the Senate concurring, that the Board of Education and Department of Education are requested to establish one full-time equivalent (1.00 FTE) position of administrative vice principal dean of students for the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Education and Department of Education are requested to include in its budget request to the Legislature funding for the administrative vice principal dean of students for the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Education and Department of Education are requested to include in the responsibilities of administrative vice principal dean of students for the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program that the administrative vice principal dean of students shall:

 

     (1)  Run and staff the Boarding Program;

 

     (2)  Increase recruitment of students for the Boarding Program;

 

     (3)  Establish student programs and vocational opportunities for the Boarding Program; and

 

     (4)  Implement the recommendations of the Lahainaluna Boarding Program Working Group as stated in its October 2015 report; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to Chairperson of the Board of Education, Interim Superintendent of Education, and Principal of Lahainaluna High School.
