HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO EXAMINE THE NECESSITY FOR CHINESE TRANSLATIONS ON SIGNAGE AT THE HONOLULU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Hawaii is a leading travel destination in the Pacific Rim, enticing travelers from all across the world to experience its tropical environment and unique culture; and

 

     WHEREAS, visitors from Asia often frequent Hawaii and, in recent years, a flourishing Chinese economy and increase in flights from China to Hawaii have created an influx of Chinese visitors to our islands; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii Tourism Authority's 2013 Annual Visitor Research Report concluded that the amount of visitors from China grew seven percent since 2012, and visitors from China have the highest daily spending rate among all visitor markets at $394 per day; and

 

     WHEREAS, Honolulu International Airport currently serves English and Japanese speaking travelers by providing signage in their respective languages; and

 

     WHEREAS, to bolster Hawaii as an accessible destination for Chinese nationals to visit for leisure and business purposes, appropriate signage should be posted for their use; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the Senate concurring, that the Department of  Transportation is requested to examine the necessity for Chinese translations on signage at the Honolulu International Airport; and
     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is requested to submit a report of its findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2016; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Transportation.
