A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO CORRECTIONS.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that on any given day, over two hundred thousand women are imprisoned or in jail across the United States.  Thousands of these women are pregnant and dependent on correctional authorities for their health care.

     The purpose of this Act is to require the department of public safety to report annually to the legislature regarding pregnancy in prison to ensure that the State provides adequate health care for pregnant women in the custody of the department of public safety.

     SECTION 2.  The department of public safety, no later than twenty days prior to the convening of each regular session, shall annually report data to the legislature regarding women in the custody of the department of public safety:

     (1)  Abortions performed;

     (2)  Miscarriages;

     (3)  Full-term pregnancies;

     (4)  The type and frequency of pregnancy complications experienced;

     (5)  Frequency of doctor appointments for pregnancy; and

     (6)  Other pregnancy related information that the department of public safety determines to be pertinent.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
