RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. Sylvan M. Byck, Jr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Mr. Sylvan M. Byck, Jr., on April 6, 2011; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Byck was born in Savannah, Georgia, the beloved son of Sylvan M. Byck, Sr.,
and Beatrice Lichtman Byck; and
WHEREAS,
a graduate of Savannah High School, Mr. Byck earned a bachelor's degree from the
University of Alabama and served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and
liberty with the United States Air Force; and
WHEREAS,
he spent his professional career in real estate management and for over three
decades he helped lead efforts to revitalize the River Street community of
Savannah, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Byck was an active member of Congregation
Mickve Israel, was a past member of the Telfair Museum board of directors, and
was a member of the Jewish Education Alliance; and
WHEREAS,
his leadership was instrumental as a founding member of First Chatham Bank and
as past chairman of the Savannah Ports Authority, the Metropolitan Planning
Commission, the Association of the United States Army, the 200 Club, and the
Savannah Waterfront Association; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Byck served as a member of the Georgia Ports Authority Board under Governor
Zell Miller and the Georgia Lottery Board under Governor Roy Barnes;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Byck was united in love and marriage for 31 wonderful years to Judy Appel
Byck, and was blessed with the support and kindness of his remarkable children,
Donna and Tony Eichholz and David and Helen Kelly; and
WHEREAS,
affectionately known as "Big Daddy," Mr. Byck was the proud grandfather of four
delightful grandchildren, Amelia Eichholz, Caroline Eichholz, Charlotte Kelly,
and Kurt Kelly; and
WHEREAS,
he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he
demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of
his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Byck will long be remembered for his love
of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, grandfather, and
friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing
him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of Mr. Sylvan M. Byck, Jr., and express their
deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Sylvan
M. Byck, Jr.
