RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Dr. Thomas Smith and his civic leadership students from Martin
Luther King, Jr. High School; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Thomas Smith has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the
vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep personal commitment to
the education of the students of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Smith teaches citizenship and civic leadership at Martin Luther King, Jr.
High School in DeKalb County, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
for the last ten years, Dr. Smith has led his ninth grade civics students in the
study of civic leadership and responsibility, both academically and by example;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Smith's students have demonstrated academic achievement in the area of civic
leadership through high test scores and the completion of projects on the United
States Constitution, federal and state government, political parties, election
campaigns, and DeKalb County government; and
WHEREAS,
the civic leadership students who have been successful in their studies include
Isaiah Beard, Jahe Canty, Devante Crawford, Demarius Culbreath, Ronnie Ferguson,
Philip Karaya, DeAndre McGhee, Samuel Poole, Walter Porter, and Linterrius
Robinson; and
WHEREAS,
in recognition of Dr. Smith's contributions to the students in this state, it is
abundantly fitting and proper for this body to honor the extraordinary
commitment and accomplishments of this outstanding individual and his students
who have distinguished themselves as civic scholars.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Dr. Thomas Smith for his sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and contributions
to the students of Georgia, recognize the positive influence he has had upon
the lives and futures of countless young people in this state, and congratulate
his civic leadership students on their academic success.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Dr. Thomas Smith and the
above-named civic leadership students.
