A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Georgia Institute of Technology Football Head Coach Paul Johnson on being named the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Coach Paul Johnson joined the Georgia Institute of Technology as head coach of the Yellow Jacket football team in 2007 after successful coaching runs at Georgia Southern University and the United States Naval Academy; and

WHEREAS, in only his second year coaching the Yellow Jackets, he led the team to a 10-2 regular season with historic wins over Florida State University, Virginia Tech, and Clemson University; and

WHEREAS, Coach Johnson's powerful triple option earned the Yellow Jackets a top ten national ranking at the end of the season and the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship for the first time since 1990; and

WHEREAS, modeling Coach Johnson's work ethic and discipline, the team produced the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and earned a bid to the FedEx Orange Bowl, a first ever Bowl Championship Series appearance for the university; and

WHEREAS, the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association recognized the outstanding leadership of Coach Johnson by naming him the ACC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, making him the only head coach in Georgia Tech's history to win this prestigious award in his first two seasons.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Georgia Institute of Technology Football Head Coach Paul Johnson on his exceptional accomplishments and achievements and congratulate him on his back-to-back Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year awards.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Georgia Institute of Technology Football Head Coach Paul Johnson.
