A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Senior Police Officer Tony Howard; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Senior Police Officer (SPO) Tony Howard is highly regarded by the citizens of his community and state and by local government officials as a person of unquestioned integrity and dedication to the sound principles of law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, he began his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Clarke County Sheriff's Office and was also employed with the Athens-Clarke County Marshal's Service; and

WHEREAS, SPO Howard joined the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in June of 2004 as a police officer and was promoted to senior police officer in September of 2005; and

WHEREAS, he was wounded by gunfire while responding to a police call and after several surgeries and months of rehabilitation he returned to duty in October of 2011; and

WHEREAS, SPO Howard has received numerous honors, including the Michael K. Connor Public Service Award in 2009, the Sherm Applebaum Award from the Athens Rotary Club and the Red Cross Heroes Award from the American Red Cross East Georgia Chapter in May of 2011, the Military Order of the Purple Heart in July of 2011, and the Sworn Employee of the First Quarter of 2011 and the 2011 Sworn Employee of the Year from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, SPO Howard is a faithful member of Timothy Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, he is united in love and marriage to Shirlisa Howard and through this union they are blessed with three remarkable sons, Terrence, Deionte, and Destin; and

WHEREAS, SPO Howard is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and by the example he has made of his life, he makes this world a better place in which to live.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Senior Police Officer Tony Howard for his effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service to the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Senior Police Officer Tony Howard.
