RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mrs. Christine King Farris; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Christine King Farris is the older and only sister of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., and serves as director of the Learning Resource Center at Spelman
College where she is an associate professor of education; and
WHEREAS,
she is the author of
Martin Luther King,
Jr.: His Life and Dream, which has been
used by educators across the nation; and
WHEREAS,
in 2010, she published her memoir,
Through It All:
Reflections On My Life, My Family, and My
Faith; and
WHEREAS,
as vice chair and treasurer of The King Center, Mrs. Farris has played an
invaluable role in helping to build the center, and her commitment, insight, and
years of hard work are reflected in every brick of the center's Freedom Hall
Complex; and
WHEREAS,
a devoted and dedicated sister, Mrs. Farris served as founder and chairperson
of the board of directors of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Child Development
Center, Inc., and is a member of the advisory board of the Martin Luther King,
Jr. National Historic Site; and
WHEREAS,
as an active member of her community, Mrs. Farris has served on the Georgia
Governor's Education Reform Commission, several key committees of the
International Reading Association, the Georgia Right-to-Read Advisory Council,
and the editorial board of the Journal of Reading; and
WHEREAS,
she is united in love and marriage to Isaac Newton Farris, Sr., and is blessed
with two remarkable children, Isaac Newton, Jr., and Dr. Angela Farris Watkins
and one wonderful granddaughter, Farris Watkins; and
WHEREAS,
she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Mrs. Christine King Farris for her efficient, effective, unselfish, and
dedicated public service to education and the State of Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Christine King
Farris.
