A RESOLUTION


Recognizing the first week of October, 2012, as Georgia Pre-K Week at the capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Georgia's Pre-K Program provides quality early education experiences to more than half of this state's four-year-old children; and

WHEREAS, the start of school in the fall of 2012 will mark the 20th anniversary of Georgia's Pre-K Program; and

WHEREAS, Voices for Georgia's Children will help celebrate the anniversary of Georgia's Pre-K Program by hosting Georgia Pre-K Week for the second consecutive year during the first week of October; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Pre-K Week mascot will be "Pete the Cat," the character in Pete the Cat, I Love My White Shoes, a book read by many Georgia legislators during Pre-K Week in 2011; and

WHEREAS, Pete the Cat series author, Mr. Eric Litwin, and illustrator, Mr. James Dean, have graciously provided "Pete the Cat" as the mascot for the event at no charge to the program; and

WHEREAS, Georgia legislators have received Pete the Cat, Rockin' in My School Shoes to read during Georgia Pre-K Week in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Litwin and Mr. Dean are proud Georgia residents who are committed to quality children's literature and fun learning experiences for young children.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body encourage parents, educators, community members, and business leaders to participate in Georgia Pre-K Week and support high quality, accessible, and affordable early education for all children in the State of Georgia; commend the hundreds of programs, teachers, aides, and staff who have built a nationally recognized pre-k program; congratulate Georgia's Pre-K Program on its 20th anniversary; and recognize the first week of October, 2012, as Georgia Pre-K Week at the capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Eric Litwin and Mr. James Dean.
