Resolution 1159
By:
Senators Seay of the 34th, Mullis of the 53rd, Brown of the 26th, Stoner of the

ADOPTED
SENATE
A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the President of the United States and the United States Congress to continue
funding public transportation for the elderly and disabled residents of Georgia;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
in 2001, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners contracted with the Georgia
Regional Transportation Authority to manage a local bus system for Clayton
County named C-Tran; and
WHEREAS,
C-Tran links bus routes to the MARTA, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International
Airport, and major commercial and academic centers in the county;
and
WHEREAS,
this greatly used public transportation service provides essential
transportation for low-income residents and life-sustaining transportation for
the elderly and the disabled; and
WHEREAS,
this important public infrastructure will be forced to stop operations due to a
lack of public funding by the federal government and United States Congress,
which has decided to cut off all federal public funding for this public
transportation program; and
WHEREAS,
the need for transportation improvements increases daily and places a strain on
our state's limited financial resources; and
WHEREAS,
the C-Tran bus system provides an estimated 2.1 million rides a year, thereby
helping to support the area's health and safety, keeping people gainfully
employed, and supporting local businesses and the state's overall economic
stability; and
WHEREAS,
public transportation not only serves to ease the traffic congestion in
metropolitan areas by providing reliable alternative transportation but also
benefits the citizens throughout this state by supporting economic development
in Georgia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body hereby urge the United
States Congress to assist Georgia by continuing federal funding of public
transportation for the elderly and disabled of Georgia and, particularly, to
continue to help fund the much needed C-Tran system of Clayton County,
Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to President Barack Obama and
each member of the Georgia congressional delegation.
