A RESOLUTION

Recognizing March 21, 2012, as Kick Butts Day at the capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, nationwide, nearly one-fifth of all high school students from ninth grade to 12th grade are current smokers, along with nearly one out of every 14 eighth graders; and

WHEREAS, in Georgia, 95,900 high school students smoke and 10,600 kids under the age of 18 become new daily smokers each year; and

WHEREAS, 10,500 adults in Georgia die each year from their own smoking and 184,000 kids under the age of 18 and alive in Georgia will ultimately die prematurely from smoking; and

WHEREAS, smoking kills more Americans than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, murders, suicides, drugs, and fires combined; and

WHEREAS, Kick Butts Day is an annual national initiative sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids that makes elementary, middle, and high school students leaders in the fight against youth tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body wish to stand up with the children of our state in opposition to the sale, advertising, and marketing of tobacco products to children and recognize March 21, 2012, as Kick Butts Day at the capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the public and the press.
