A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails for its dedication to the development of historic driving trails; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia contains countless sites relating to the American Civil War era, including antebellum, military, civilian, African American, women's, Reconstruction, and other significant history; and

WHEREAS, Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails is a nonprofit organization working on the development of six historic driving trails in Georgia that would highlight important Civil War era battles and provide a comprehensive history of the Civil War in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails has divided this state into six historic Civil War era regions: the Chickamauga & Atlanta campaigns, the March to the Sea, the pursuit of Jefferson Davis, Wilson's Raid, the Northeast Georgia mountains, and South Georgia's agricultural bounty; and

WHEREAS, established in 2000, Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails has raised over $1 million in federal grants, plus hundreds of thousands more in both private and public funds, to be used to create six driving trails to be used as an interactive history lesson, attracting Georgia residents and visitors of all ages; and

WHEREAS, Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails has begun the installation of approximately 300 historic interpretive markers, over 2,000 roadway directional trailblazer signs, the construction of several roadside parking pull-off areas, and the initial printing of over one million new educational/tourist brochures with an informative website (www.gcwht.org); and

WHEREAS, the dedicated efforts of Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails to establish Civil War era attractions throughout this state is worthy of recognition.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails for establishing six historic driving trails to educate and remind the public of a war which divided this nation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails.
